The Read Group welcomes all delegates visiting for the 2nd European Neurospora Meeting and the 9th European Conference on Fungal Genetics (ECFG9). We are looking forward to inspiring and enjoyable meetings.

The lab also welcomes Dr. Jun-ya Shoji from Japan, joining the lab for the next seven months.

Alex Lichius has returned from his 6-week research visit to the University of Technology Vienna, Austria.

January 2008

Nick Read gave a talk on 'Imaging living cells of Aspergillus in vitro' at the '3rd Advances against Aspergillosis' meeting in Miami, Florida, USA

Alex Lichius is visiting the laboratory of Prof. Christian Kubicek and Dr. Verena Seidl at the University of Technology, Vienna for six weeks. during his stay he presented a seminar talk on 'Hyphal Fusion in Neurospora crassa.'

Robert Dinwiddie has joined the lab as a final year Honours project student for four months.

Gabriela Roca has returned to the lab after spending four months at the State University of Oregon in Michael Freitag's lab.

Registration for the European Conference on Fungal Genetics (ECFG9) taking place from the 5th - 8th April 2008 here in Edinburgh is now open. Abstract submission deadline is the 11th January 2008.

December 2007

Nick Read gave a seminar on 'Self signalling and hyphal fusion in Neurospora crassa' at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany.

We also say good bye to Ulli Binder. She is now back in her lab in Austria. Gruess mir die Berge und viel Spass beim Skifahren!

The lab says good bye to Javier Palma-Guerrero who returned to his lab in Spain. ¡Mucha suerte, amigo!

Nick Read presented a talk about 'Imaging and Manipulating Living Fungal Cells' at the University of Strathclyde. Alex Lichius gave a seminar on 'Hyphal Fusion in Neurospora crassa' at the University of Exeter.

Verena Seidl, Pete Marris and Graham Wright have left the lab. They will be missed.

Meiling Chu has joined the lab as a new PhD student.

The lab also welcomes Ulrike Binder as visiting PhD student from the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria.

The lab welcomes Javier Palma-Guerrero as visiting PhD student from the University of Alicante, Spain.

The first issue of Fungal Biology Reviews (Senior editors: Nick Read & Nick Clipson) is published and features cover images produced in the lab. Contributors were Chris Jeffree, Kathryn Lord, Gabriela Roca, Eric Kalkman and Patrick Hickey.

May 2007

The movie 'The 11th Hour' (produced by Leonardo DiCaprio) is premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It features movies from the lab that were made by Patrick Hickey and Nick Read.

Eric Kalkman received an Honourable Mention in the Olympus BioScapes competition.

Nick Read has been awarded a BBSRC grant of £610,788 on 'self signalling during cell fusion in filamentous fungi' for three years from 1st January 2007.

Nick Read and Pete Marris both presented talks at the BMS meeting in Birmingham, UK. Graham, Kathryn and Shoujer also presented posters. Kathryn won the Microscopy prize and Graham won the Poster prize.
